A BLUE SHARK TELLER DOESN'T EXPLAIN ITSELF.

It drifts between instinct and obsession, chaos and rhythm, beauty and interruption.

Some photographs make immediate sense.

Others resist meaning entirely.

Created from tens of thousands of photographs made over years of travel, observation, and wandering, this collection gathers the images that refused to leave the photographer alone.

Taken across cities, coastlines, islands, alleyways, train stations, churches, canals, deserts, and forgotten corners of the world, these photographs are not arranged as a travel diary. They are presented as fragments of a larger visual story.

A Blue Shark Teller is a fine art photography book built on symbolism, repetition, hidden connections, and personal mythology. Images echo one another across continents. Numbers appear with intention. Certain subjects return unexpectedly. Meanings overlap, disappear, and reappear again.

The photographs are sequenced to encourage discovery rather than explanation. Each viewer is invited to find their own path through the work.

Perhaps that's enough.

After all, a Blue Shark Teller breaks all the rules.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jose Batista-Ayala is a still and motion picture creative whose work explores coincidence, symbolism, memory, and the unexpected relationships that emerge between images separated by distance, time, and geography.

Over the course of years, he has photographed across North America, Europe, the Caribbean, and beyond, building an archive of tens of thousands of images. Rather than documenting destinations, his work seeks moments that feel strangely connected…objects, people, places, colors, numbers, and patterns that seem to belong to a larger conversation.

A Blue Shark Teller is his first published photography book and represents a curated selection of images chosen from a much larger body of work.

Every photograph contained in this edition was created and photographed by Jose Batista-Ayala.

THE NUMBERS

For those paying attention, the dates, numbers, sequencing, and recurring visual elements throughout A Blue Shark Teller contain intentional references connected to an ongoing hidden theme woven throughout the work.

Some meanings are obvious.

Others are not.

Discovery is part of the experience.

A BLUE SHARK TELLER

300 copies. One edition. No digital release.

When they're gone, they're gone.

A Blue Shark Teller doesn’t explain itself.

It drifts between instinct and obsession, chaos and rhythm, beauty and interruption. Some images make immediate sense. Others resist meaning entirely.

These photographs were chosen from tens of thousands of captured moments simply because they refused to leave me alone.

This book is a first for me, but the impulse behind it is not.

For years, I have moved through the world collecting fragments, crossing oceans, wandering cities, and standing in places both ordinary and impossible. I have witnessed people, places, and moments that many never get the chance to encounter. Not because I was searching for them, but because they appeared and I happened to be there.

These photographs were made across continents, cultures, and countless miles. There was no master plan. No prescribed route. No single story tying them together. Yet each image belongs here.

I rarely create with a fixed destination in mind. Curiosity has always been a better compass than certainty. What remains after the journey is the work itself, a record of what held my attention, challenged my perspective, and refused to be forgotten.

Maybe that’s enough.

The photographs will always speak more clearly than I can.

After all,

I break all the rules.

This is only the beginning.

My legacy will not be found in a single image or a single book, but in the lifelong pursuit of seeing differently, elevating still and motion photography one idea, one frame, and one story at a time.
